As a business we are committed to working in a sustainable way and are undertaking the following actions to achieve this:
Monitor the measurable elements of our business such as waste, energy and occupancy. Compare & analyse so we can strive to be ever more efficient & annually calculate our CO2 emissions. Aim to reduce our electricity use by 30% over 3 years (to end 2011).
Minimise waste to landfill by primarily reducing, re-using & recycling. In 2009 we diverted 65% of our waste from landfill by composting 42% & recycling 23% of our waste. Landfill waste = 35% of all our waste, aim to reduce landfill by 5% in 2010.
Prevent methane production in decomposing kitchen waste by aerobically composting most kitchen arisings on site, using an in-vessel composter.
Encourage & practice efficient water use & reduction of pollution by having a bathroom policy which reduces the amount of laundry to wash and our Bag it, Bin it message.
Minimise the use of chemicals in cleaning which are hazardous & toxic. We use microfibre cloths, natural ingredients & green cleaning methods.
Constantly investigate ethical &/or local / Scottish products and services. We liaise with local communities, which helps our business to become more sustainable & of greater benefit to the local economy.
Reduce the number of car journeys we make. Encourage guests to leave the car behind or reduce the mileage for 1 day through our website or in-house suggestions - Activity & Walking folders, Cycle Hire & daily judicious advice.
Support efforts which improve & preserve the destination as a whole, culturally, environmentally & socially ñ local businesses and guests all benefit from staying for more than just a night ~ in 2009 ~ 70% of our guests stayed here 3 or more nights.
We are members of Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) and comply with the relevant environmental legislation & commit to continuous improvement, suitable training and sustainable development.
