This is a wild and wonderful place encompassing mountains, glens, lochs and beaches. You can get completely off the beaten track, walk for miles and not see another person. Rare plants, animals, birds, butterflies and moths can be spotted, if you are patient and look carefully.
There is a plethora of artists from all genres
using and taking inspiration from what is around us here -
textiles, pottery, metal work and painting to name but a few.
Very talented people can be found in each community producing
small through to major pieces of work - some to view &
others to purchase.
Such a special area also warrants just being still and absorbing the atmosphere. Time spent soaking up the peace and quiet, breathing clean air, listening to the sounds of the sea shore, enjoying the quality of light and stunning views. Read a book, go painting, bird spotting, paddling in a canoe or fishing?
There are several mountain guides who can
be booked in advance to take you into more challenging territory
amongst the high mountains and Munros. The most local, qualified
guide living in the village is Jim Sutherland who runs nineonesix.
The Loch Torridon Hotel also runs a guided range of activities.
We have bikes to hire (nominal rates to cover
maintainence & insurance) with safety gear. 2 mens &
2 ladies, along with a bike shed for storing your own bikes.
The drying room also acts as an indoor storage area for extra
kit you may bring. Just ask if you have forgotton gaiters
or poles as we usually have spares around.
The activities (on the left hand menu) are
not meant to be prescriptive. Pick and choose according to
the weather, height of the tides, length of daylight and stay,
opening hours and seasonality of your destinations.
Most of our suggestions are no more than
an hour away, within Wester Ross and a 50 mile radius. We
are keen to showcase what this area has to offer without contributing
too much to global warming and encouraging you out of your
vehicles!
Midges are around from June - September.
They like still, warm, overcast conditions. Walking at a brisk
pace is often enough to outrun them! There are various products
on the market from natural to un-natural to keep them at bay,
along with some good midge nets around. We have plenty of
tips to help you not to be too bothered by them, such as avoid
dark clothing & don't plan an evening picnic.
We print a weather forecast each day to put
on the breakfast table and are very happy helping guests to
make the most of each day tailoring our suggestions to your
interests, kit and indicated abilities. We can check a weather
radar to look where any rain is likely to be.
